Everything a learner needs

More than 91,000 English and Burmese entries, built for everyday learning.

Automatic & Alternative Suggestion

Suggestions appear as you type, and a misspelled word brings up “Did you mean…” alternatives so you still find the right entry.

Comprehensive Explanation

Pronunciation, numbered meanings in English and Burmese, grammar, example sentences, collocations, word family and origin.

Synonyms & Antonyms

Meanings list words that mean the same and the opposite — tap any of them to open its entry.

Search with Myanmar Language

Look words up in Burmese, too — more than 21,500 Burmese headwords with example sentences and English translations.

Use Application with Myanmar Language

Switch the whole app to Burmese — menus, settings and help — or keep it in English.

Backup and Restore across multiple Devices

Save your recents, favourites and settings to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive, and restore them on another device.

Hear Every Word

Listen in US, UK or Australian English with adjustable pitch and speed. iAbidan picks the best voice installed on your device, and reads Burmese words with an on-device Burmese voice you download once.

Tap Any Word

Words inside definitions and examples are links, so you can follow an unfamiliar word straight to its own entry.

Recents & Favourites

Keep the words you’re learning close, and filter them by date or by language.

Light, Dark & Text Size

Choose Light, Dark or Automatic, and set a text size that’s comfortable to read.

Works Offline

The whole dictionary lives on your device, so you can look words up without an internet connection.

Free to Use

Every entry and feature is free. Premium simply removes the ads.

The dictionary comes to the words

Look words up without typing them — from the page in front of you, from any app, or by saying the word.

Point your camera at a book, sign or worksheet, take a shot, then tap any word on the page to see its meaning.

Tap the camera button in the search bar. Needs a device with a back camera.

Look Up from Any App

iOS 26+On-devicePrivate

Learn smarter with Apple Intelligence

On supported devices, iAbidan uses Apple’s on-device model to help you understand and use English. Nothing you type leaves your device.

Meaning in Context

Meaning in Context

Type or scan a sentence and tap a word. iAbidan picks which of the dictionary’s meanings fits that sentence, shown in English and Burmese.

Fix My Text

Fix My Text

Paste your English and get corrections for grammar, spelling and punctuation, with each change marked and explained.

Word Practice

Word Practice

Practise the word you just looked up with short quiz questions built from its entry — meanings, grammar and usage.

Word Illustrations

Word Illustrations

For nouns, iAbidan draws a picture of the word on your device with Image Playground, so you see the word, not just read it. Pictures are an impression of the word, not a definition.

Requires a device that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on: iOS 26 or later for Meaning in Context, Fix My Text and Word Practice, iOS 18.4 or later for Word Illustrations. The model works in English only.

General

Do I need to pay to use iAbidan?

No. iAbidan is free to download and use, with every entry, pronunciation and feature included. A small banner under the definitions helps pay for the ongoing work on the dictionary.

Does iAbidan work offline?

Yes. The dictionary is stored on your device, so searching, reading entries and listening to pronunciations work without a connection. Backup & Restore, ads and Premium purchases need the internet.

Why can’t I find some words?

iAbidan now has more than 91,000 entries, and when a word is misspelled it suggests the closest matches under “Did you mean”. We keep adding new words with each update. If a word you need is missing, please email it to us at [email protected].

Can I use iAbidan in Burmese?

Yes. You can search in Burmese, and you can switch the whole app to Burmese in Settings › Language.

How do I look up a word from another app?

Select the word in another app, tap Share and choose iAbidan. The entry opens without leaving the app you’re in.

How do I look up a word with the camera? (iOS)

Tap the camera button at the end of the search bar and point the camera at printed English text. Words the dictionary knows appear along the bottom as it reads; tap one to see its meaning. Take a photo to freeze the page, then tap any word where it is printed to see its headword, pronunciation and meaning, with a button through to the full entry.

To see what a word means in a sentence, open Meaning in Context and tap Scan beside Paste: take a photo, tap a sentence, and it fills the field. Meaning in Context needs Apple Intelligence.

The camera reads English only; Burmese text is not recognised. Reading happens entirely on your device, and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

The camera button is missing or the camera won’t open. (iOS)

The camera button shows only while the search field is empty, and only on devices with a back camera.

If the screen says Camera Access Is Off, tap Open Settings and allow the camera for iAbidan, or go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera.

If no words are found, move closer so the text is larger and sharper, hold the phone steady, and tap the flashlight button in low light. Handwriting and decorative fonts may not be read.

How do I look up a word with the camera? (Android)

Tap the camera button at the end of the search bar, then tap Take Photo to use your phone’s camera app, or Choose Photo for a picture you already have. Point it at printed English text. iAbidan reads the page and marks the words it knows: tap one to see its headword, pronunciation and meaning, with a button through to the full entry. Tap Retake for another page.

To see what a word means in a sentence, open Meaning in Context and tap Scan beside Paste: take a photo, tap a sentence, then Use Sentence to fill the field. Meaning in Context needs Gemini Nano, the on-device AI.

The camera reads English only; Burmese text is not recognised. Reading happens entirely on your device; the photo stays only in iAbidan’s private storage on your phone until the next scan, and nothing is sent anywhere.

The camera button is missing or the camera won’t open. (Android)

The camera button shows only while the search field is empty, and only on devices with a camera.

iAbidan uses your phone’s own camera app to take the picture, so it never asks for camera permission itself. If the screen says no camera app is available, enable or install a camera app, or tap Choose Photo and pick a picture from your gallery instead.

If no words are found, move closer so the text is larger and sharper, hold the phone steady, and turn on the camera app’s flash in low light. Handwriting and decorative fonts may not be read.

Ads & Premium

What does the Premium subscription do?

Premium is a yearly subscription that removes all ads from iAbidan on every device signed in to the same Apple ID, and supports the continued development of the dictionary.

Every entry, pronunciation and feature stays free without Premium. The subscription renews automatically each year, and you can cancel it at any time in your Apple ID’s subscription settings, at least 24 hours before it renews.

Why am I seeing advertisements?

iAbidan is free to download and use. A small banner under the definitions helps pay for the ongoing work on the dictionary.

Subscribe to Premium to remove all ads. If you are in the EEA or the UK, you are asked for consent first, and you can change your choice at any time in Settings › Ad privacy options.

Why do I still see ads after subscribing to Premium?

Premium belongs to the Apple ID that bought it. If ads are still showing:

  • Open Premium and tap Restore Purchase, signed in with the Apple ID you subscribed with.
  • Check that the subscription is still active in the Settings app under your name › Subscriptions. A billing problem can pause it.
  • Connect to the internet so iAbidan can check with the App Store. A device that has been offline for more than a week past a renewal date may show ads until it can check again.

If ads still appear, send us feedback and tell us when you subscribed.

Voice

How do I hear Burmese words read aloud? (iOS)

iOS has no Burmese voice of its own, so iAbidan uses a Burmese voice that runs entirely on your device. It is a one-time download of about 40–115 MB, depending on your device, and works offline afterwards.

Open Settings › Voice Services in iAbidan, and under Burmese Voice tap Download. The size is shown before you download. Tapping the speaker beside a Burmese word before the voice is installed opens the same instructions.

The first word after opening the app takes a moment while the voice loads; a spinner shows on the speaker button, and tapping it again cancels. You can remove the voice from the same screen to free the space.

How do I hear Burmese words read aloud? (Android)

Android has no Burmese voice on most devices, so iAbidan uses a Burmese voice that runs entirely on your device.

Why is the voice quality poor? (iOS)

iAbidan reads words aloud with the text-to-speech voices built into iOS. Every device comes with a small Compact voice, which can sound flat or robotic.

Apple offers clearer Enhanced and Premium voices as free downloads, and iAbidan switches to the best one installed automatically. Open Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices › English (on iOS 26: Settings › Accessibility › Read & Speak › Voices › English), pick a voice marked Enhanced or Premium, and tap the download icon beside it.

Premium voices need iOS 16 or later.

Why is the voice quality poor? (Android)

iAbidan reads English words aloud with your device’s text-to-speech engine. Some devices only have a basic voice installed, which can sound flat or robotic.

Most engines offer clearer voices as free downloads, and iAbidan uses the best one installed automatically. Open Settings › System › Languages › Text-to-speech output (or tap Open text-to-speech settings in iAbidan’s Voice Services), open the preferred engine’s settings, choose Install voice data, and download an English voice.

I can’t hear the voice (iOS)

If nothing plays when you tap the speaker button:

  • Turn off Silent Mode. iAbidan’s voice follows the Ring/Silent switch or Action button.
  • Turn up the volume with the side buttons.
  • If headphones or a Bluetooth speaker are connected, check that the sound is going there.
  • Open Voice Services and tap Test to hear the selected voice.

Burmese words are read aloud by the Burmese voice downloaded from Voice Services; without it, tapping the speaker beside a Burmese word shows how to get it.

I can’t hear the voice (Android)

If nothing plays when you tap the speaker button:

  • Turn up the media volume with the side buttons. iAbidan plays words at media volume, not ringer volume.
  • If headphones or a Bluetooth speaker are connected, check that the sound is going there.
  • English words are read by your device’s text-to-speech engine. If the device has no engine, or its engine has no English voice, iAbidan shows a message when you tap the speaker. Tap Install Voice to download one, or install Speech Services by Google from Google Play.
  • Voices that need the internet can’t be used offline. Download an English voice so words can be read without a connection.
  • After installing a voice, come back to iAbidan and tap the speaker again. You don’t need to restart the app.
  • Open Voice Services and tap Test to hear the selected voice. If no English voice is available, Voice Services shows an Install Voice button.

Burmese words are read aloud by the Burmese voice downloaded from Voice Services; without it, tapping the speaker beside a Burmese word shows how to get it.

Why can’t I search by speaking Burmese? (Android)

Voice search needs the Burmese recogniser, a one-time download of about 20–80 MB depending on your device. It runs entirely on your device and works offline; nothing you say leaves it. The first download also fetches the voice engine from Google Play.

Open Settings › Voice Services in iAbidan, and under Burmese Voice Search tap Download. Tapping the microphone in the search bar before it is installed opens the same instructions. If Voice Services says it needs a newer iAbidan, update the app from Google Play.

If the microphone button is missing, clear the search field first; it shows only while the field is empty. If iAbidan listens but hears nothing, allow the microphone for iAbidan in Settings › Apps › iAbidan › Permissions, hold the phone a little closer, and say one word or a short phrase; it stops by itself when you pause. The recogniser understands Burmese only, so English words still need typing.

What it heard is shown with the dictionary words it matches: tap one to open it, or tap Search to edit the text.

AI features

Why can’t I use the AI features? (iOS)

Meaning in Context, Word practice and Fix My Text run on Apple Intelligence, entirely on your device. They need:

  • iOS 26 or later
  • a device that supports Apple Intelligence
  • Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri
  • the on-device model to finish downloading, which can take a while after you turn it on

The model works in English only. On a device that cannot run it, the AI features are hidden.

Word illustrations use Image Playground instead of the language model, so they also work on iOS 18.4 and later with Apple Intelligence turned on.

Why can’t I use the AI features? (Android)

Meaning in Context, Word practice and Fix My Text run on Gemini Nano, Google’s on-device model, entirely on your device. They need:

  • a device that supports Gemini Nano through Android AICore, such as a Pixel 8 or later, a Galaxy S24 or later, and some other recent phones
  • the on-device model, which Android downloads once; it can take a while after you first open an AI feature

The model works in English only. On a device that cannot run it, the AI features are hidden.

Can I connect iAbidan to external AI agents? (iOS)

iAbidan does not connect to ChatGPT or other AI services itself. Its own AI features run on Apple Intelligence on your device, and nothing you look up or type is sent anywhere.

On a device with Apple Intelligence, you can turn on Apple’s ChatGPT extension in Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri › ChatGPT. You can then use ChatGPT through Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence while you use iAbidan, for example to rewrite text you type in Fix My Text or Send Feedback. You choose what is sent to ChatGPT, which is provided by OpenAI in the regions where it is available.

Can I connect iAbidan to external AI agents? (Android)

iAbidan does not connect to ChatGPT or other AI services. Its own AI features run on Gemini Nano on your device, and nothing you look up or type is sent anywhere.

You can still copy text from iAbidan, for example from Fix My Text, and paste it into any other app you choose.

Backup & feedback

I can’t back up or restore.

Backups are saved to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive, and include your recents, favourites and settings. If a backup or restore does not work:

  • iCloud: sign in to iCloud in the Settings app, and turn on iCloud Drive for iAbidan.
  • Google Drive: sign in from Backup & Restore, and allow iAbidan to use its own folder in your Drive.
  • Check your internet connection and your free cloud storage.
  • Restore with the same provider and account you backed up with. A Google Drive backup can only be opened with the Google account that made it.

Restoring merges the backup with what is already on the device, so nothing saved is lost.

How can I send feedback?

We are always looking for ways to enhance the user experience, and your feedback is valuable in helping us achieve that goal. If you have any suggestions for improvement or are encountering issues, please use Send Feedback in the app or email [email protected].
